Meet Emmett

Emmett has had a life-long love of dinosaurs. With the help of some blue herons and a few trips to Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, his interest has turned to birds. The 7 year-old from Hancock County wants to be an ornithologist when he grows up.
He’ll have a financial start on his college thanks to a winning essay in the SMART529 When I Grow Up essay contest.
Emmett, who also enjoys swimming, karate and soccer, decided that the blue herons near his home resembled some of the dinosaurs he had learned about. That led to a trip to an aviary and a dream.
“We went to an aviary, and that’s when I decided I wanted to be an ornithologist,” he said. “I like how the birds fly and just how they do stuff. The bald eagle is my favorite because I like how they catch fish and bring it back to their babies.”
In his essay, Emmett noted how he would like to have his own aviary and that people could someday call him “Doc Emmett, the Birdman.”
