Meet Lexey

Future Astronaut

To say the sky is the limit might be an underestimate for Lexey, a fifth grader at New Life Christian Academy. The bright 11 year-old is aiming for the entire Milky Way as she hopes to be an astronaut when she grows up. She earned $500 to put toward her education by having a winning entry in the SMART529 When I Grow Up essay contest.

“I’ve kind of been wanting to go into space for a couple of years,” she said. “I’ve read a lot about it. You’ve got to be good at math and science. Plus, I like learning about the planets, especially Mars. You could actually go there. I want to be the first woman to go to Mars.”

Lexey has visited the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio and explored the space shuttle that is housed there. She collects Legos and one of her most prized ones is her Women of NASA set.

When she is not studying all things space, Lexey is usually found singing or playing music. She sings and conducts in a girls’ choir and plays the piano, violin and ukulele.
