The SMART529 Automatic Investment Program (AIP) is an easy way to make regular contributions to a college savings account. Just provide the dollar amount and frequency of your contributions (typically monthly), and they'll be transferred electronically from the bank or credit union account you specify to your SMART529 account.

Family members and friends can participate, too

Account owners, family members and friends can all contribute to a SMART529 account through AIP.For example, suppose new parents have just set up an account for their child and opt for two deductions on the 15th and 30th of every month. Both sets of grandparents also contribute regularly. The parents' two monthly investments and each of the grandparents' investments add up to the maximum of four automatic investments per account.

Automatic Increase

With the Automatic Increase feature you can designate an annual percentage increase in your contributions to the AIP. This increase can be changed at any time. As a reminder, you'll receive notification of the increase one month before it's set to take effect. Log in to your account and set up Automatic Increase.

It's easy to change your automatic investments

You can change your automatic contribution amount and timetable at any time. You can also turn AIP on and off as needed. For instance, if your household budget is tight over the holidays, you can turn AIP off in November and turn it back on in February or March when your finances are back to normal.
